Kura Bari Program: Nigeria’s Oil Sector Reform: Expectations and the Reality

4 September 2021
Reading time: 1 minute

Hello and welcome.

Today in Kura Bari Program we will discuss President Muhammadu Buhari’s signing of the historic Petroleum Bill into law on the 16th of August. Stakeholders have been calling for reform in the oil and gas sector for years.

Mallam Garba Shehu, the president’s spokesman, says the Petroleum Industry Act aims to attract more foreign capital into the country’s oil and gas sector.

The Act introduces pertinent changes to the governance, administrative, regulatory and fiscal framework of the industry to ensure transparency, strengthen the governing institutions, attract investment capital and eliminate corruption, among other objectives.

Many believe it is a step in the right direction. But others are concerned that the industry overhaul will not be able to deliver the full benefits of the intended reforms, especially as many of the new roles are filled with familiar faces.

Our guests are:

  • Ibrahim Ciroma, the zonal operations controller at the department of petroleum resources;
  • Crema Kyari of the Networkof CivilSociety Organisations in Borno State; and
  • Jidda Abdul-Aziz Ajayi, a senior economics lecturer at the University of Maiduguri.
