More than 100 hungry roaming elephants are tramping farmlands and leaving farmers with no harvest in Rann village in Kala/Balge, a local government area of Borno State.

Flooding earlier this year had already washed away farm produce.

Modu Mamman Tar, an internally displaced person who relies on farming to survive, told RNI reporter Amina Abbagana that this was the second year the elephants had raided the area.

He said the locals had tried chasing the elephants but they came back for more.

Tar said locals suspected that the elephants were coming from Cameroun.

He urged all levels of the government to help, describing the raids as a “menace and a life threat”.

Abba Kaka Abba Kyari, another victim, said the people of Rann were starving. The women and children were most at stake because the road to the village had been closed for more than 10 months, denying them access to food and other essential needs.

Babagana Umara Zulum, the governor of Borno State, was aware of problem and had distributed food to Rann’s residents last week.
